| Title : | The History Wars book launch |
| Date : | 03 September 2003 |
| On Wednesday 3 September 2003 at the State Library of Victoria, Mr Keating launched The History Wars, by Stuart Macintyre and Anna Clark. In his address, he referred to Stuart Macintyre's book as a 'code stone' which would, in future, help others decipher the current debate about history and national identity. And how history is being dragooned into service as a political resource. In the speech, Mr Keating reflects on the limitations of conservative orthodoxy in Australia and its failure as a body of thinking, to meet Australia's national and geopolitical demands. He says it suffers from lack of any sense of imagination. He also deplores the use of disparaging terms such as 'political correctness' which he describes as a slur against a public morality based around notions of charity and human regard. |
